IMPERATOR CAESAR DOMITIANUS

I see before me the Gladiator lie:

He leans upon his hand—his manly brow

Consents to death, but conquers agony,

And his droop ‘dhead sinks gradually low —

And through his side the last drops, ebbing slow

From the red gash, fall heavy, one by one,

Like the first of a thunder-shower; and now

The arena swims around him—he is gone,

Ere ceased the inhuman shout which hail’d the xvretch who won.

[Y veo ante mí al gladiador derribado:

se apoya con una mano, su recia frente

consiente ante la muerte, pero conquista la agonía,

y su cabeza ladeada se hunde poco a poco;

y, por su costado, las últimas gotas fluyen lentamente

desde la herida roja, cayendo pesadas, una a una,

como las primeras gotas de una tormenta; y ahora

la arena se revuelve a su alrededor, y entonces muere,

justo antes de que cese el clamor inhumano que vitorea al vencedor.] ^[26]
