En un memorándum secreto, fechado el 16 de diciembre de 1969, se valora la funcionalidad de las bases aéreas españolas de Torrejón, Morón y Zaragoza en caso de guerra general, guerra limitada y tiempo de paz. Los datos relacionados con la base de Rota, la más importante de las instaladas en nuestro suelo, aparecen tachados en este documento desclasificado.

is particulaly attractive in view of their current economic problems. Moreover, the Spanish have already clearly indicated their desire that American installatations exploit Spanish geography and they are less interested in housing facilities that could be easily relocated elsewhere.

In 1969 the MAC airlift station at Torrejon ranked second among US European military air terminals in numbers of aircraft and passengers, and third in terms of total cargo. The MAC terminal in Spain is of considerable convenience, but could be replaced in Italy. Moreover, if our other Spanish facilities are reduced, the tonnage and passengers handled in Spain would drop considerably. However, we may well be able to retain the MAC terminal at Torrejon even if the base is run completely by the Spanish or we might be able to relocate the terminal at one of other airbases.

Finally, the elimination of SAC tankers would result in difficulty in refueling the Mediterranean orbit of the SEAGA exercise. However, as indicated earlier, alternative dispositions of tankers should be available.

Sea Base Operations.

The naval base at ROTA serves (texto tachado) Additionaly, anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and intelligence-gathering aircraft are also based there.

An anti-submarine aircraft squadron operates out of ROTA covering the Eastern Atlantic. There is very little choice in relocating the site of this squadron--only the Azores or Gibraltar--if we wish to maintain surveillance of the area.
